President’s Message, May 2011

I would like to start this message by saying Congratulations and Thank You to Nassau Police Commissioner Lawrence Mulvey. Congratulations on your upcoming retirement. Thank You for leading the Department with dignity and class.

Contrary to my announcement at last months meeting, the Empire State Games for the Physically Challenged will take place on June 2 thru 4 at Mitchel Field. They are scheduled because of the untiring efforts of a few individuals, particularly Susan Gordon Ryan and Angela Melody. The volunteer application is on page 7.

Don’t forget that Saturday morning, May 28, we will once again honor our deceased veterans by placing flags on their graves at LI National Cemetery in Farmingdale. Call our office for further details.

I am honored to announce that the recipient of our Shields Member of the Year award is Bob Forrester, a long time Shields member and supporter. Bob is being honored for his help and support of our Children’s Christmas Party, and for his attendance at many Shields events throughout the years.

Speaking of events, plans are already in progress for our Annual Moonlight Cruise to be run on Friday August 5th.

Please note the change of date for our next meeting, April 14 to the 7th. This was necessitated to accommodate our guest speakers: Mr. Daniel Murphy, father of slain Navy Seal Michael Murphy Medal of Honor Recipient; Mr. Gary Williams, author of SEAL OF HONOR; and Lt. Cmdr. Thomas Schultz, CO of the soon to be commissioned USS Michael Murphy. This promises to be a memorable evening, which has been designated as Shields Family Night. Bring your spouse, girlfriend or significant other for the price of a member.

We will have a special Police Officer of the month award presentation at the April 7th meeting; join us as we honor this fine individual.

Hope we see you at one of the events that we have scheduled, I’m sure you’ll have a good time.

Remember to keep the men and women defending our country in your thoughts and prayers. Remember the people in Japan also.

Fraternally,
Richie
