While on routine patrol POs McCaffery and Bambino were assigned to assist a 15 year old female, 9 months pregnant and in labor. Upon arriving on the scene, located at 354 Hempstead Ave. Apt. #1 West Hempstead, the officers observed the female aided, Shannon Hannah, and her mother awaiting their presence outside the residence. While Officer Bambino attended to the aided, Officer McCaffery conversed with a friend of the family, Mrs. Michelle Falconer, who is a school crossing guard. Mrs. Falconer advised the officers that they had no car seat or any other baby supplies for Shannon’s soon to be delivered child. Additionally, Mrs. Falconer advised the officers that their apartment was basically unfurnished and empty except for a lone mattress on the floor.
After transporting the aided to Winthrop Hospital, the Officer’s used Face book and word of mouth to raise hundreds of dollars, and contributions of new and slightly used baby supplies, furniture gift cards, etc to assist Shannon and her family.
In the following days the officers delivered the donated supplies and furniture several times, utilizing a donated truck for furniture delivery. The two officers with the assistance of others set up the apartment for Shannon and her family with living room furniture, bedroom furniture, a kitchen set, microwave and extensive baby supplies, such as a changing table, diapers, formula etc.
The actions of POs Melissa McCaffery and Ashley Bambino greatly improved the lives of Shannon, her mother, and the new born baby. The officers distinguished themselves in a manner beyond normal expectations by setting up an entire apartment with the basic necessities of life and by showing tremendous compassion, and concern to brighten up the lives of Mother, Daughter and new born child.
It is with great pride that the Long Island Shields present to you, POs Melissa McCaffery and Ashley Bambino, as our Police Officers of the Month.
